About us
This website was made by two explorers from Mid Sussex.
We’re both fundraising for our Explorer Belt across Europe in 2026. Consider following our Facebook and Instagram pages through the links in the bottom of the page for more info.
We created this website partly to fundraise for explorer belt but also to try and help scout leaders across East and West Sussex with their hiking and expeditions. We are starting with over 100 pre-walked routes and will add more to them as time goes on.
There are opportunities for all sections of scouting, broadly speaking difficulty 1 is Squirrels, difficulty 2 is Beavers, difficulty 3 is Cubs, difficulty 4 is Scouts and difficulty 5 is Explorers+.
However these aren’t set in stone and you may prefer a shorter walk even for an explorer or a more challenging walk for a beaver.
This website is by no means exclusively for scout leaders, the wide ranges of routes are suitable for people all across Sussex and beyond. They will work quite well for families, I would roughly go for taking the difficulty appropriate to your lowest aged child.
Various things can provide difficulty with walking and make our estimations of time less accurate. For example, in winter where the ground is likely to be very wet underfoot I would add around 30% to times for Ashdown Forest, 10% to times in the South Downs and 20% anywhere else. This is since the highland of the South Downs get much less muddy than the clay of Ashdown Forest. If there is high wind and rain or extremely cold temperatures then the south downs may prove dry underfoot, but are very exposed and susceptible to the elements making it less pleasant overall.
Please explore the website and I hope this proves useful to you in your walking journey.
If you ever want a route in an area we haven’t explored, want some advice on some or have a query then feel free to get in contact with me at isaacbilton@gmail.com.
Have Fun!
Yours in Scouting,
Isaac and Toby.
